“Volunteering with Challenge Wales
Our Director, Peter, has recently begun his training to become a volunteer crew with Challenge Wales, a charity focused on helping young people achieve their potential through outdoor learning at sea.
This award winning, predominantly volunteer-led charity inspires young people aged 12 – 25 years to broaden their horizons, achieve their potential, develop social and personal skills, improve their employment prospects in a challenging, adventurous and positive environment. This is achieved through sail training activities on 72-foot Challenge Wales | Wales’ Tall Ship and 60-foot Adventure Wales. Activities onboard also improve mental health and self-confidence.
Those onboard get involved in all aspects of sailing the boat, from helming and navigating, hoisting the sails to preparing meals and no sailing experience is required to take part.
In preparation for taking young people on board during the summer season, Peter’s initial training was carried out on one of Challenge Wales’ non-stop adult-only adventures from Cardiff to Polruan. Although the conditions were slightly challenging for someone with limited sailing experience, he was able to learn many new skills and meet a variety of people on board that he looks forward to working with again in the future. These included Andy Hall, Skipper and CEO of the charity, as well as Russell Bright, one of the Trustees and lucky roommate sharing with Peter during the night time sail.
As well as developing as a formal volunteer with Challenge Wales, the training carried out will also help Peter become not only a competent crew member, but eventually a Skipper with RYA qualifications along the way.
We are looking forward to working with Challenge Wales in the near future to host a corporate day on board the boat to help raise funds and increase even more awareness of the local charity and the amazing work they do.
So watch this space for more details coming very soon…”
